I’m going to be brief here, because the few pictures I’m going to put up here are pretty self-explanatory!

Not only are they beautiful, but they are also incredibly functional!

There are no pictures YET of the coloured handles, which include adding my skills in precise stringer application, surface manipulation and encasing.  From the date of this entry, it has been exactly 30 days that I have been making these, and the response has been overwhelming!  Thanks to everyone who has visited GypsyRoad at the Halifax Farmer’s Market on the Seaport here in my beautiful, beautiful hometown.

Shout-out to Beautiful Haligonians!

If you were to poke around the internet, looking at bits and pieces of the work that I’ve created over the years, (and heck, the ambiance of this blog!) you may have noticed that I enjoy interpreting and re-interpreting my favorite nature-companions: Trees!

I can remember being 16, sitting on the side of the Northwest Arm of Halifax Harbour, picking at stones the way some people pick at grass while lazing in a field.  During one afternoon of roasted hot-dogs and apples by the seashore, absentmindedly using the corner of a jagged piece of slate to draw a tree on a blue stone worn smooth by the the ocean.   I drew a tree bare of leaves, and of intricate branches and roots.  This memory sticks out in my mind mostly because the friend who sat beside me that day said “I didn’t know you could draw!” and my response was that I could only draw trees.

Well, my drawing skills have grown since then, my love and respect of trees has deepened, and it seems that my fascination with creating trees in any art medium I can get my hands on is ceaseless!   The exciting new foray has, you guessed it, resulted in Glass Trees!

I hope everyone likes these initial photos!

Love,

Janelle

Although some of the beads in this slide-show have already been made into Sterling Silver Jewellery, these are just the beads themselves, in all their glory!  I acheived some really fantastic results from using Double Helix Glass, as well as some Complex Cane with truly inspired colour combinations.  My favourite is the one I call “Night Lake” which you can see on the set of beads that have solid Ivory as their back-ground.

Feast your eyes!

There are many many pictures that I have taken over the years of my work, but I will post some of the most current here.

This Spring (April 2010), I hope to participate in the “Halifax Crafter’s Spring Show”, for which I submitted my application in plenty of time!

I’ll also show and demonstrate my glass work at the Parrsboro Gem and Mineral show again this year, as I have for the past 3 years.  More on that and on other shows in the future, when my actual presence there is confirmed.

I thought it might be nice to give you folks a taste of what to expect on April 17th and 18th at the Olympic Centre, so I am posting some pictures for you all to see here.

Amber and 925 Sterling Silver. Size 8. Original Design by Janelle Tyler.

This design of this piece is clean and modern.  I could see a no-frills lady with a love of trees being the ideal wearer of this piece.

"Road and Path" by Artisan Janelle Tyler

"Road and Path" Sterling Silver Pendant. Approximately 55x25mm

Another piece that is modern, but a bit more organic is entitled “Road and Path”.  It is the first in a series of many pieces that explore through line and texture our experiences with staying on the conventional “road”, and following our true “path”.

Matching earrings, and other pieces in this series are currently sitting on my jeweller’s bench awaiting final finishing.

Nova Scotia Wildflower Vase "Purple Lace" by Artisan Janelle Tyler

Nova Scotia Wildflower Vase "Blue Ribbon" Approx. 60x40mm.

While it is true that these vases were made about 2 years ago, I continue to make new ones for my mother’s collection, and for sale when the show timing and venue is appropriate to display this type of work.  The first one I ever made was given to my best friend, and she kept a “Johnny Jump-Up” alive for 2 weeks in her itty-bitty Nova Scotia Wildflower Vase.
Making these vases without them cracking from thermal shock can be difficult, but it is definately worth it.  The vase in the picture below was made much more recently, and I love the way it throws vibrant coloured light.  More of these are slated to be made in time for Mother’s Day.

Hope you’ve liked what you’ve seen, and that you’ll visit again soon to see some Glass Faeries and Angels!
